Upon the initiative of Hungary, the UN General Assembly unanimously decided to designate September 5 – the day on which Mother Theresa of Calcutta passed away – as the International Day of Charity on December 17, 2012.
The General Assembly has invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to commemorate the International Day of Charity in an appropriate manner, by encouraging charity, including through education and public awareness-raising activities. The values epitomized by the work of Mother Theresa are in harmony with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights issued by the UN and contribute to promoting dialogue between various civilizations and cultures.
