Foreign Minister János Martonyi received Lamberto Zannier, the Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on May 29, on the sidelines of the international conference hosted by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the International Centre for Democratic Transition.

Martonyi and Zannier primarily discussed security policy issues at their meeting. They reviewed the main security policy challenges facing the Eurasian region and the common tasks to be performed in order to enhance the security community. They also touched upon the recent developments in Hungarian legislation, which are a matter of continuous dialogue between Hungary and the OSCE.

The OSCE is mainly interested in media regulation, the election law, the law on election procedures, the operation of courts and the fight against anti-Semitism. The Hungarian Foreign Minister and his guest also discussed the tasks of the OSCE in relation to national and ethnic minorities. They agreed that the OSCE’s new High Commissioner on National Minorities, to be elected soon, could contribute significantly to remedying the problems of minorities in Europe.
