Hungary, as a member of the EU and NATO, is part of the developed world, and therefore is obliged to contribute to solving global problems, - stated Szabolcs Takács, the Deputy State Secretary for Global Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Corvinus University on October 24.

State Secretary Takács opened the photo exhibition entitled „International development cooperation – Struggle against poverty”, which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Corvinus University on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Deputy State Secretary for Global Affairs emphasized that foreign policy was changing and it did not only focuse on traditional issues as security policy any more. International development cooperation had become a significant element as well.

State Secretary Takács pointed out that Hungary also pays attention to the struggle against poverty, and though it is a domestic problem as well, Hungary must take part in global efforts. He welcomed that Hungarian NGOs and volunteers also participated in these efforts, adding that it was fortunate that Corvinus University hosted the exhibition because future experts on economy and international relations could learn more about the struggle against poverty.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been commemorated since 1992 – in Hungary since 1996 – on the basis of a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly. 189 UN member states committed themselves to fighting global poverty in 2000, setting the objective to reduce the number of those who live off on less than a dollar by half until 2015.
