Head of Budapest's art gallery Műcsarnok Gábor Gulyás, who recently announced that he will be stepping down, has been appointed as Ministerial Commissioner in charge of promoting contemporary Hungarian art abroad.

Minister of State for Culture János Halász told a press conference on Thursday that Mr Gulyás would leave Műcsarnok on September 1 under an agreement with the Ministry of Human Resources, and take up his new position immediately after.

As ministerial commissioner, Mr Gulyás will also work on the concept of a Budapest Biennale, expected to be held in 2015 for the first time, and retain his position as Hungary's Commissioner for the Venice Biennale, he added.

Financial director of Műcsarnok Ms Piroska Medgyes Kovács will be put in charge of the institution on an interim basis.
