Military intervention in Syria should be avoided if at all possible since it could cause serious problems, MFA Parliamentary State Secretary Zsolt Németh declared before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian Parliament on 11 September 2013.

Zsolt Németh stated that Syria’s religious and ethnic problems could only be resolved through finding a political solution. He also said that the international community should find a way to prevent the use of chemical weapons in the future. It is good news that the role of the UN has become more prominent over the past couple of days; the investigation of the UN inspectors in Syria shows that, and their report on the chemical attack may already be available by the end of this week – Zsolt Németh added.

The Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that in the near future an agreement could be proposed about obliging Syria to destroy its entire stock of chemical weapons and to join the international convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons. Mr. Németh said that the Syrian crisis was in the focus of Hungarian diplomacy and Hungary’s approach had been „fast and proactive”.

László Kovács, the socialist Vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said that Hungary had given a timely and appropriate response; György Csóti, a Fidesz member of the Committee, said that Hungarian diplomacy was handling the issue in a „restrained and intelligent” way.
